RAPID CITY - A strong passing game helped St. Thomas More make good use of its power at the net, leading the Cavaliers to a three-set sweep of Hill City in girls high school volleyball Thursday night.

The Cavaliers won 25-12, 25-11, 25-15, in a Black Hills Conference matchup at the More Gymnasium.

The Cavaliers were crisp in serve-receive and setting up the attack, while Hill City struggled with setting and hitting errors.

The Cavs were slow to start, but pulled away with points coming in bunches in the games one and two.

Hill City, led by Alise Kelting, Kelby Weidhold, Amanda Straw and Jessica McDonald, held tough in the third game before the Cavaliers reeled off seven unanswered points to pull away.

Kelsey Bekaert was 51-of-53 in directing the offense, helping the Cavs to wind up 59-of-71 in attacks with 20 kills.

"I was very pleased with the way we handled the ball tonight. We were able to get it into a good position and our hitters were able to finish," said More coach Brandon Kandolin.

Alexa White led the Cavs with seven digs and eight kills. Erin Duffy added six kills.

"They're very strong hitters and they're very good, but again it all stems from us being able to handle the pass, getting it into the setter's hands so she can do her job," Kandolin said. "When that works out, everything comes together and we look like a team."

Bekaert also shared service ace honors with Theresa Poloncic with four each.

Hill City was 22-of-33 in attacks with seven kills. Kelby Weiderhold led the Rangers with three kills. Alise Kelting had two solo blocks.

"A lot of it is the speed. When we don't have a lot of speed, it's hard for us to practice for it and deal with it because we don't see it," said Hill City coach Susan Roth.

"You can't get any offense going if you're constantly trying to dig and if your passes don't get up you can't do much with it," Roth said. "They were getting to every ball we put to them and they were able to hit."

Both Hill City (4-16 overall and 0-10 BHC) and St. Thomas More (19-5 overall, 7-3) play in the Douglas Invitational Saturday in Box Elder.
