BOX ELDER - Douglas served up a sweep of Hill City in girls high school volleyball Thursday. Chelsea Edwards tallied 11 of the Patriots' 18 service aces, leading to a 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 Black Hills Conference win over the Rangers at Whitehead Auditorium.

Edwards started the first set strong from the back line and that seemed to set the tone for the match. The quick start helped Douglas to an 18-11 advantage, and from there the Rangers would only score twice more.

"We served exceptionally well tonight, and I thought Hill City struggled with the serve-receive," said Patriot coach Jeff Nugent. "Chelsea does a great job serving for us. She started game one with a bunch of points."

"We have some problems with serve-receive," said Hill City coach Susan Roth. "When you get in a hole like we did in the first game, it's hard to come back."

With the Patriots leading 11-5 in game two, a pair of Douglas hitting errors and a block by Hill City's Kelby Weiderhold brought the Rangers back to within three, but Douglas rattled off 11 unanswered points in a 14-1 run to close out the game.

Douglas continued to hold the momentum at the start of the third game, scoring seven of eight points but Hill City climbed back in to the contest.

"We put in a couple of younger girls who really wanted the ball. They got the ball to our setters and we were finally able to hit it for us," Roth said.

A pair of aces by Audrey Berberich and series of serving and Douglas' hitting errors helped Hill City rally for a 15-13 lead, but from there Douglas went on a 12-2 run to close out the match.

Edwards finished as she had started with three aces to end the game.

"We can hit the ball, but if you can't pass, you can't hit," Roth said. "That's what we'll be working on."

Kelsey Schwartz added five aces for the Patriots, 61 of 68 in serves.

Christina Scheler's seven kills led Douglas. Schwartz added six and reserve Jenny Pietle had five.

Brooke Sandmeier had eight digs and Kayla Miller seven for Douglas

Jordan McCausland was 25-of-25 in passing with 14 kill assists. Sandmeier was 16-of-17 with 10 assists.

"Kelsey Schwartz did a great job hitting. There were some mismatches at the net for her," Nugent said. "Both of our setters did a nice job of getting the ball to the mismatches."

Berberich was 8-of-8 in serving with all three aces for Hill City. Alise Kelting led the attack with seven kills, and Mariah Asheim was 13-of 15-in assists with four kill-assists.

Douglas (3-2 overall, 3-0 BHC) hosts Belle Fourche in another BHC matchup Tuesday. Hill City (0-4, 0-2) hosts Hot Springs in another league contest, also on Tuesday.
