RAPID CITY - Dustin Hagans kicked a 36-yard field goal in the third overtime to lift Mayville State to a 10-7 victory over South Dakota Mines in a non-conference game Saturday.
Hagans' game-winner came after he had a 25-yard field goal blocked in the first overtime. A Mines' timeout gave the Comet junior a chance to gather himself and put the blocked kick behind him.
"I just knew they were going to pressure me from that side," said Hagans, who doubles as a wide receiver for Mayville State. "I just tried to make it as fast as possible. It worked."
The win lifted the Comets to 1-2 overall. The loss ended Mines' winning streak at two games and left the Hardrockers at 2-1.
Mines misfired on three field goal attempts during overtime. Tony Becker was short from 44 yards at the end of the first extra session, Justin Whalin's 26-yarder missed wide left in the second, and Becker had his third kick blocked.
"Everybody had their chances," Kratzer said of the three overtime possessions. "We just didn't get it done.
"You want to be able to play in these kinds of games. The kids love it. As long as they have a chance to compete, they'll stick their noses back in there."
The game was a defensive stalemate for much of a warm afternoon at O'Harra Stadium.
Mines finally cracked the scoreboard when running back Joshua Jones, who rushed 31 times for 126 yards Saturday, bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out. The touchdown capped a 99-yard drive that saw the Hardrocker offense move as efficiently as it had all season.
"That's what we have to have," Kratzer said. "You have some consistency like that to have a chance to win some games."
But Mines' hopes of its first 3-0 start since 1981 were dashed when Mayville State drove down the field and answered the Hardrockers' lone score of the day.
Comets coach Joey Ford did a nice job of mixing running and passing plays as Mayville State drove 58 yards for the tying TD.
Six plays into the drive, running back Brian Young scampered seven yards on fourth-and-2 to keep Mayville State's drive alive. Quarterback T.J. Stanford then completed five straight passes, the last one a 14-yard toss to tight end Matt Stenehjem for a touchdown to tie the game and set up overtime.
The Comets were 25 yards from victory in the opening overtime when Hagans lined up to boot a field goal during the first overtime session. Joseph Berke kept Mines' hopes alive when he broke through and smothered Hagans' kick.
The Hardrockers best shot at victory came in the second overtime, but Whalin's field goal attempt from 26 yards narrowly missed to the left.
After Becker's 44-yard kick was blocked, Hagans found himself lining up the game-winner.
"It's an adrenaline rush," Hagans said. "You just have to keep your head on straight and execute."
Mines must regroup from a tough loss and get ready for their Dakota Athletic Conference opener at Dickinson State on Saturday.
"We're not going to be in this valley for very long," Kratzer said. "We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves. It's a tough league."
The Hardrockers and Blue Hawks kick off at 1:30 p.m.
