HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Hot Springs battles back to down Newell

Newell won the first set 25-12, but the Hot Springs offense rallied for three straight wins, 25-13,

25-12, 25-21, to claim a Black Hills Conference volleyball win on Thursday in Hot Springs.

"We had a hard time getting our game going," Hot Springs coach Tanna White said. "Newell had some big hitters and we have to practice better defense to beat them in three next time."

Carlie Weiss led the Bison

offense with nine kills. Randi and Chandel Weiss had seven kills apiece. Randi coordinated the offense with 16 set assists and led the team with 10 digs. Charlee Hughes and Lacey Iverson each served four aces.

For Newell, Megan Mutchler paced the team with 10 kills. Taylor Trohkimoinen added nine aces and six kills. Katie Tifft, Morgan Meyers and Jordan Trohkimoinen combined for 75 digs on the night. Camylea Cox had 29 set assists and Cierra Boylan contributed 12.

Hot Springs (3-0 overall) plays in the Philip Tournament on Saturday. Newell (2-8, 0-3 BHC) travels to Hill City on Thursday.

RED CLOUD 3, LITTLE WOUND 0: Alanna Brown Bull had five kills for Little Wound, but it was not enough as Red Cloud rolled to a

25-15, 25-12, 25-22 volleyball win on Thursday.

The loss dropped Little Wound to 1-1 on the season, while Red Cloud improves to 4-6.

Little Wound returns to action on Saturday at St. Francis. Red Cloud hosts Custer on Saturday.

Wall 3, Kadoka area 0: Wall swept past Kadoka Area, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23, in high school volleyball action in Wall on Thursday night.

The Eagles are now 3-0 on the year as Loni Humphrey tallied 12 kills to lead the offense.

Katrina Kjerstad was one of three Wall players with five service aces along with Shelby Crown and Madison McLaughlin.

Tiana Kjerstad added 22 assists for the winners who will now play Redfield/Doland in the Clark-Willow Lake Tournament on Saturday.

St. Thomas More 3, Custer 0: St. Thomas More earned a road win over Black Hills Conference foe Custer, 25-17, 25-17,

25-20, on Thursday in Custer.

"We didn't come in mentally prepared," Custer coach Renae Schneider said. "We forgot the basic fundamentals of volleyball."

Custer was led by an all-around effort from senior Melissa Flores who had five kills, five aces and four solo blocks. Shawna Gibson added two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Taylor Neugebauer led the defense with six digs.

St. Thomas More (3-7 overall) hosts Wall on Tuesday. Custer (8-3) travels to Red Cloud on Saturday.

GIRLS TENNIS

STM/RCCH 8, SPEARFISH 1: St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian improved its girls tennis dual record to 6-1 with an 8-1 win over Spearfish Thursday at Sioux Park.

The lone Spartan win came at No. 1 singles, with Audri Swisher edging Alexis Haakedahl 7-5 in the first set, then gaining the sweep with a 6-2 win in the second set.

More/Christian went on to win the five remaining singles matches and all three doubles matchups.

"I think Spearfish has gotten better since the last time we played them," said More coach Mary Helen Flanery. "They won the one match and got an extra game here and there in the other matches."

The Cavaliers swept Spearfish 9-0 on Aug. 25.

"My girls always give me their best. Not only are they good tennis players, they're good competitors. They're always polite and courteous even when they win," Flanery said.

The Cavs are scheduled to host Todd County Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sioux Park. St. Thomas More will travel to Brookings on Monday to play the host Bobcats, Sioux Falls Washington and Milbank. On Tuesday, the Cavs are in Madison to face Madison and Vermillion.

SOFTBALL

RAPID CITY CENTRAL 6, RAPID CITY STEVENS 5, 8 INNINGS: The Rapid City Central softball team picked up a 6-5 win over crosstown rival Rapid City Stevens on Thursday in high school softball.
