RAPID CITY - Rapid City Racers Mike Godbe, Brian Gorman, Ryan Henderson and Tyler Smoragiewicz set a new South Dakota state record in the 400-meter medley relay for boys ages 15-18 during the Rapid Swimvitational on Saturday.

The team smashed the 26-year-old record by more than 10 seconds with a time of 4:34.24.

Godbe led off the medley relay team in the backstroke, followed by Gorman swimming breaststroke, Smoragiewicz swam the butterfly and the team was anchored by Henderson's freestyle leg.

The previous mark was set June 1, 1982 swam by Rapid City Racers Grady Ham (backstroke), Jeff Gorman (breaststroke), Lane Johnson (butterfly) and Greg Geiger (freestyle) swam a 4:44.23.

Jeff and Brian Gorman are father and son.

"It was great to be a part of the relay team that broke my dad's old relay record, but the really awesome thing is that the Rapid City Racer's Swim Team will continue to hold this record," Brian Gorman said of breaking his father's mark. The younger Gorman added, "I am looking forward to swimming the event at next month's state meet to see if we can improve our time."

Sunday, Rapid City Racers Godbe, Gorman, Ryan Smith and Smoragiewicz set another South Dakota state record in the 400-meter freestyle relay for ages 15-18.

The team broke the 10-year-old record by nearly seven seconds with a time of 3.57.65. The previous record of 4:04.33 was set in July 1998 by the Vermillon Area Swim Team.

Brian Gorman also set an individual South Dakota state record in the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:58.14 breaking the 2005 record of 9:00.93 set by Paul Gordon, of the Sioux Falls Snow Fox.

The Racers hosted more than 100 swimmers from 18 teams and five states during the three-day Swimvitational meet.

The Rapid City Racer Swim Team is a year-round competitive age group swim club with approximately 40 swimmers ranging in age from 6-18. It is a nonprofit, parent-run USA Swimming club with a full time coach in Zach Devine and assistant coaches Duncan Olney and Liz Willis.
