SPEARFISH - Spearfish rallied for a 13-10 win over Chadron, Neb., in the first game of a scheduled American Legion baseball doubleheader on Friday evening at Black Hills Power Stadium.
The second game was under a lightning delay with Spearfish holding a 2-0 lead on Jess Cooper's two-run home run.
The Nationals roughed up Spearfish starting pitcher Jordan Johnson for four runs in the first inning and two runs each in the second and third frames of the opener.
Post 164 claimed its initial advantage of the game at 9-8 after a five-run uprising in the home half of the third.
A two-run home run by Casey Kuhnel reclaimed a 10-9 edge for the visitors in the top of the fifth. Spearfish responded with a run-scoring single by Johnson, taking an 11-10 lead in the home portion of the fifth.
Cody Rosenau's two-run single provided a pair of insurance runs and upped the Post 164 lead to 13-10 in the bottom of the sixth.
Allen Hemeyer worked out of a based-loaded jam in the last half inning. He earned the save in relief of winning hurler Rick White.
Justin Kemp scored four runs and chipped in two hits for Post 164. Ryan Royer and Rosenau each crossed home plate twice and had two hits. Johnson delivered two hits and knocked in three runs. Hemeyer and Kyle Ringwood provided two RBI apiece. Johnson, White, Cooper, Chase Bridges and Ringwood scored one run each.
Louie Brezina took the pitching loss for the Nationals. A.J. Grant tallied four runs and connected for two hits, while L.J. McLain contributed two runs and a pair of two-baggers.
Spearfish improved to 32-14 with the win. Post 164 hosts Powell, Wyo., in a doubleheader at Black Hills Power Stadium on Sunday.
