Girls basketball: Stevens notches first win

SPEARFISH - Rapid City Stevens scored half of its points from the free throw line as the Raiders got their first win of the season, a 48-35 victory over Spearfish in Greater Dakota Conference girls basketball action Friday.

Stevens (1-9, 0-5 GDC) hit only 11 field goals but made the most of its 35 free throw attempts. The Raiders hit 24 of their charity tosses against the Spartans (3-6, 0-6 GDC).

Spearfish out-shot Stevens from the floor. The Spartans made 13-of-47 field goal attempts to the Raiders' 11-of-51 shooting. Stevens held a 41-24 rebounding advantage and turned Spearfish over 27 times.

Stevens took control of the game early. The Raiders led 15-8 at the first quarter break and 25-18 at the half.

Spearfish pushed back into the game in the third quarter, pulling within 36-32 with eight minutes to play.

Stevens held the Spartans to three fourth quarter points and pulled ahead with their shooting from the free throw stripe.

The Raiders made 12 of their 16 free throws to account for all of their points during the final stanza.

Amy Sykora, who finished with 10 points, went 5-of-6 from the line over the final eight minutes.

Callie Bechtel led all scorers with 13 points. Brooke Garner followed with 11 points. Garner also snared eight rebounds for Stevens, as did Justin Blade.

Katie Heggem scored eight points to lead Spearfish. McKenzie Marta and Erika Carlson followed with seven points each.

Carlson pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Spearfish is back in action on Jan. 18, when the Spartans host Sturgis in GDC play. Stevens next plays Yankton, a home game on Jan. 18.
