RAPID CITY - The Rapid City Central volleyball team got solid performances from all over the floor on Tuesday at Howard Naasz Gymnasium to take a four-game Greater Dakota Conference match from the Sturgis Scoopers.

"A win's a win, you can't complain about that," Central head coach Leslie Weber said of her team's 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 25-15 victory. "The girls did a good job of moving the ball around and getting different people swings. Our block has been phenomenal lately as well."

The Cobblers were strong up front behind Kattie Ranta, Kristen Quasney, Michelle Sosa, Andrea Peterson, Andrea Johnson, Alisha Gillespie and Caitlin Templeton. The Cobblers had 49 kills in four games. Ranta had three solo blocks and 14 digs, while Gillespie chipped in with two solo blocks and three assisted before having to be helped off the floor in the final game after landing awkwardly on her right ankle.

"It didn't look too good, to be honest," Weber said of the ankle, which started to swell immediately.

The Cobblers and Scoopers took turns winning the first two games as both teams rode momentum from quick starts to wins. The victory in the second game was the Scoopers first this season against the Cobblers, who beat Sturgis in three games on Aug. 28. That improvement pleased head coach Sharon Peterson.

"I'm happy with how we played," Peterson said. "We have to work on our defense and hitting the ball harder, that's where we have some problems, other teams hit the ball harder than we do right now."

Nobody hit the ball harder than Templeton on Tuesday, as the 6-foot-1 junior repeatedly sent kills screaming to the floor, despite a strong net presence from Sturgis' Breanna Janovy and Julia Hale. Templeton led all players with 13 kills on the night.

The Cobblers, coming off of a three-game loss to undefeated Pierre this past weekend, used that match to help in this one.

"That was one of the better matches we've played this season even though we lost," Weber said of her team. "They kind of took that energy and were excited about winning some games this week."

The Cobblers (9-19 this season) played just their second match in front of a home crowd so far this year. Weber hopes that the upcoming homestand against Mitchell and Huron this weekend will get the Cobblers moving in the right direction down the stretch.

"I told them that this is a good chance to get the season turned around, go 3-0 at home and set the tone for the rest of the season," Weber said. "They (Mitchell and Huron) are teams in our region so that's something where we kind of look toward the future when we play them. We know that they're both good programs but we haven't seen either of them yet."

The Scoopers, 3-11 on the year, will play their biggest rival - the Spearfish Spartans - on Saturday in Sturgis. The Scoopers defeated the Spartans in three games back on Sept. 25 in Spearfish.
