SIOUX FALLS - South Dakota State University wants to do a feasibility study on replacing Coughlin-Alumni Stadium where its football games are played.
Athletic director Fred Oien said the SDSU Foundation will try to raise money to hire a consulting firm that will examine the availability of private money for construction, interest in seating options and ways a new football stadium could generate revenue.
"We'll use this for the first-phase planning," Oien said. "We're not planning to build something - we're planning to get everything ready so we can decide whether this project even has legs."
Coughlin-Alumni Stadium holds about 15,000 people. It opened in 1962.
A decision to replace it would require approval through the South Dakota Board of Regents and the Legislature.
The football stadium was on a list of possible building projects over the next 15 years that SDSU President David Chicoine gave the Regents. Also on the list were renovations at Frost Arena, permanent seating for recently built baseball and softball fields, an indoor practice facility, and an addition to the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Development Center under construction.
