Tennis: Raider netters edge Cavaliers

Rapid City Stevens downed St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian, 8-1, in a high school tennis dual between the two schools Saturday at the Sioux Park courts.

The Raiders were playing a bit short-handed with some players out because of illness. Morgan Paluch missed the entire match and Cassie Malik and Sydney Moyle both missed the singles.

"I felt our kids played very well today considering the circumstances," said Stevens head coach Jason Olson. "St. Thomas More is a very solid team."

The Raiders got off to a 3-0 start by sweeping all three doubles matches.

Lauren Shultz then picked up her 105th singles win as Stevens started singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over More's Aisling Gould.

Taylor Messinger, subbing for Paluch, came back to defeat Cheyenne Raforth 5-7, 7-5, 12-10.

The Cavaliers lone win in the match was by Alexis Haakedahl defeated Kaitlin Wanek at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2.

Lexie Hammerquist, Kelly Feehan and Kelsie Dubon then won their singles matches to close out the match for Stevens.

"Taylor and Lexie did an awesome job filling in for us," said Olson.

Stevens is now 26-2 on the season with both of the losses coming to Sioux Falls O'Gorman.

The Raiders will be in action next week at the state tournament beginning on Thursday in Rapid City.
