Sturgis' Madeleine Takahashi wins girls race; Roosevelt claims girls team championship
HURON - Rapid City Stevens and Sioux Falls Roosevelt battled for the team titles at the Huron Invitational Cross Country meet on Saturday.
Pierre's Travis Fitzke won the boys race in 15 minutes, 51 seconds.
Darren Messenger was the top Raider finisher in fifth place with a time of 16:24. Thomas Kjerengtroen placed ninth in 16:54.
Stevens tallied 72 points to edge Roosevelt by three for the boys team title.
"All our varsity boys got out really well and posted good breaks at the one mile mark," Stevens coach Forrest Flaagan said. "It was nip-and-tuck with Sioux Falls Roosevelt, but we stacked up head-to-head with them really well which made the difference."
Mike Krsnak led the Cobblers with a fourth place finish (16:11).
Rapid City Central finished third in the team chase with 113 points.
Sturgis' Madeleine Takahashi won the girls race in a time of 15:38.
The Rough Riders took the next three places and tallied 28 points to claim the team title.
Stevens took second with 52 followed by Douglas and Central with 129 and 137, respectively.
The Raiders' top three finished consecutively: Annie Pfeifle took fifth (15:56), Emily DeVries sixth (16:22) and Taryn Sahli in seventh (16:22).
"We had our top three runners get out in front," Flaagan said. "Our secondary scorers got a slow start, but came back after a mile to get in good scoring positions."
Jenifer Richards' ninth place finish led the Cobblers. Custer's Karley Knokol finished 15th (16:50).
Stevens' Tanner Chlebord won the boys junior varsity race in 14:46.
The Raiders won both junior varsity races with nine girls in the top 10 and six boys in the top 10.
