SPEARFISH - The Spearfish football team gave No. 2-ranked Sioux Falls O'Gorman everything it wanted for the first half on Friday. Unfortunately, for the Spartans there was still a second half.

The Knights racked up 12 first downs in the second half, while Spearfish ran just 15 offensive plays, rolling to a 37-6 Greater Dakota Conference rout of Spearfish.

"I thought Spearfish played very well," Sioux Falls O'Gorman head coach Steve Kueter. "They came out and played hard and gave us everything we wanted. We just wore them down a little at the end. But they're a good football team, a lot better than people know and we have a lot of respect for them."

After O'Gorman kicked a 30-yard field goal on its first possession, the Knights fumbled on their second possession, giving the Spartans (2-4 overall, 1-3 GDC) the ball on their own 41-yard line. One play later, Spearfish back Jordan Johnson broke a 59-yard touchdown run down the Knights sideline for an early 6-3 lead.

"He's a heck of a back," said Kueter. "I have a lot of respect for that young man. He's the real deal."

The Knights faced a fourth down on their next drive but a direct snap fake punt for 34 yards gave them the ball on the 13-yard line. Three plays later quarterback Tony Viger scored on a 1-yard run.

O'Gorman (5-1, 4-0) added to its lead at the end of the second quarter with a 7-play, 58-yard scoring drive. The Knights moved the ball methodically down field, running by committee and taking up huge chunks of yardage on each play. The drive was capped by a 4-yard run by Mike Pharis for a 16-6 halftime lead.

"We have a good offensive line and a good defensive line, and that's been a staple for us all year, and it was again tonight," said Kueter.

In the second half, both the offensive and defensive fronts for the Knights dominated the line of scrimmage, putting together two scoring drives in the third quarter for a 30-6 advantage. The first was a 75-yard march of 11 plays via the running game. The second was a 50-yard drive that took just over one minute.

O'Gorman racked up 356 rushing yards in the game, and had four different players reach the end zone. They were led defensively by Mike Pharis who had three sacks and eight tackles.

Spearfish is at home on Friday, hosting Sioux Falls Roosevelt in another Greater Dakota Conference contest.
