WINNER - No. 5-ranked Platte-Geddes earned a trip to the state tournament by defeating Little Wound 70-61 in the Region 7A championship game on Tuesday night.
The Black Panthers led by six points, 42-36, after the third quarter and held off a late Mustangs rally in the final quarter to pick up the victory.
Keith Cutler netted 23 points to lead four Platte-Geddes players in double figures. Jordan Johnson added 20 points, Collin Ringling had 12 points and Thad Campbell 10 for the winners.
Little Wound, last year's State A runner-up, was led by Brice Hornbeck's 22 points and 13 rebounds. Shawn Keith followed with 19 points and Trin In the Woods chipped in 12 points. The Mustangs finished their season with a record of 15-7.
The Black Panthers made 22-of-31 free throw attempts compared to only 4-of-5 attempts for Little Wound.
Platte-Geddes (20-3 overall) returns to the State A basketball tournament on March
13-15 in Sioux Falls after a three-year absence. The Black Panthers finished third in the state tournament in 2005.
REGION 3B
ABERDEEN - No. 3 Sully Buttes captured the Region 3B title with a hard-fought
51-43 victory over James Valley Christian sending the Chargers on to Aberdeen and the State B tournament on March 13-15.
Sully Buttes held the Vikings to two six-point quarters, the first and the third, as the Chargers now look to improve on their fourth-place showing from the finals a year ago.
Sully Buttes (21-2 overall) was led by Spencer Yackley's 13 points.
Tanner Foth came off the bench to score all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, while Alex Rausch added eight in a reserve roll for Sully Buttes.
The Charger bench outscored the Viking bench 18-4 in the game.
Yackley and Foth grabbed 17 of the Chargers' 34 rebounds, as they controlled the boards limiting JVC to only 18 rebounds.
Lee Glanzer led James Valley Christian (17-6) with 15 points and Michael Loewen added 11.
REGION 8A
FAITH - Campbell County erupted for 26 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Takini 70-50 and win the Region 8B championship on Tuesday night.
Leading 44-43 heading into the final eight minutes, the Express powered their way into the State B tournament in Aberdeen next week by outscoring the Skyhawks 26-7.
Kyle Weisbeck recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for Campbell County.
Sheldon Weisbeck added 18 and Collin Vander Wal tallied 14 in the win.
Takini held leads of 17-16 and 35-34 after the first two quarters.
Corey Condon led the Skyhawks (9-14 overall) with 16 points. Eric Kills Crow hit for 15 and Gideon Hayes netted 13.
The Express made 54 percent of its field goals (27-of-50) while the Skyhawks connected on only 35 percent (21-of-60).
Campbell County (18-4) outscored Takini 13-2 from the free throw line while missing only two charity tosses.
Campbell County will be making its first appearance in a state tournament. Herreid was the B runner-up in 1967.
