CHADRON, Neb. - Chadron State scored in every quarter Saturday afternoon while defeating Wayne State 55-14 in a non-conference football game played in 95-degree heat in Chadron.

The tone was set on the game's third play when Wayne State fumbled and the Eagles' Craig Kaiser turned it into a 47-yard touchdown return. The Chadron State offense also scored touchdowns on seven of its 10 possession in the game.

In some ways, the game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated. Chadron State finished with 467 total net yards and Wayne State with 450. The Wildcats had possession of the ball 33 minutes compared to Chadron State's 27, but Wayne State came up empty three times on drives of between 62 and 65 yards.

"We didn't play well at times, but we were tough in the red zone," Chadron State defensive coordinator Todd Auer said. "They executed their option well a lot of the time, but we would eventually come up with big plays that stopped them."

Both tailback Danny Woodhead and quarterback Joe McLain scored twice for the No. 5 ranked Eagles (2-0). Woodhead's scoring runs were from one and five yards, both in the first half. McLain scored on a one-yard plunge and an 11-yard jaunt after he looked to pass, both in the second half.

Chadron State also got touchdowns from alternate tailbacks Mark Haag and Aaron Cookley on runs of eight and 14 yards, respectively. The Eagles' final TD came on an 11-yard pass from second-team quarterback Zac Zandstra to Tyler Watson.

Woodhead finished the day with 16 rushes for 104 yards. He also gained 99 yards on four short passes that he turned into big plays.

Included was a lob from McLain that the Chadron State senior carried 51 yards to the Wayne eight. Haag reached the end zone on the next play.

Wayne State, which was opening its season, scored on a five-yard run by tailback Travis Rhone of the third play of the second quarter and an 80-yard pass from quarterback Silas Fluellen to wide receiver Logan Masters early in the fourth period.

Rhone, a transfer from Iowa Central Community College, carried 22 times for 103 yards. Fluellen completed 16 of 26 passes for 237 yards, while Masters caught four passes for 154 yards.

Cookley added 99 yards on 12 carries for the Eagles. McLain completed 11 passes for 17 yards for 190 yards and was not intercepted. CSC safety Paul Schweger, who also had nine tackles, killed one of Wayne State's drives by intercepting a pass that he returned 13 yards early to midfield early in the fourth period. McLain scored his second touchdown seven plays later.
