BROOKINGS - Hugs. Cheers. High-fives. Exuberant applause.

All these emotions were showcased at the state Class A State Gymnastics Championship on Friday at the Swiftel Center.

Madison made history Friday by capturing its 14th straight state title and earned the most consecutive high school state victories in the nation.

"It's been a great road. We had some bumps, but it has been an amazing ride and we are the champions," Madison assistant coach Kindra Wiese said.

The team came in first with a score of 141.896. That's a new state record for total points set by a team at a state A meet. Madison beat its own record set last year of 141.893. The school's gymnasts had the high scores in all four categories - balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault.

Madison championship alumni and former coaches were recognized before the scores were announced. The team's fans immediately erupted into applause and celebration.

Britton-Hecla came in second with a score of 130.028. Milbank came in third with a combined score of 126.796. Deuel came in fourth with a team score of 126.563 and Hot Springs rounded out the top five teams with a score of 125.028. Stanley County placed eighth with a score of 124.096.

The Hot Springs team had strong performances in the vault and floor exercises but struggled on the balanced beam and uneven bars.

"I thought we had a lot of positives, and I really liked how the girls performed. We had some falls but we look forward to competing tomorrow," said Hot Springs head coach Dana Nachtigall.

The team scored 33.565 on the vault. That was good enough for fifth place. The team's score on the uneven bars was 27.982, which earned a ninth place for that event. On the balanced beam the team scored 30.866 for fifth place. In the floor exercise Hot Springs' score was 32.615 for third place.

The four top scores in each event determine the overall team score.

Stanley County scored a 33.065 on the vault, placing them in ninth place. The team scored a 29.582 and earned seventh place on the uneven bars. On the balanced beam the team scored 31.233, which put them in fourth place. They scored 30.216, good enough for seventh place in the floor exercise.

Today, the top gymnasts will vie for the individual state championships. Events begin at 10:30 a.m.

Nearly 200 girls will compete at a two-day event in both Class A and AA.

The 35th anniversary of the gymnastics state championships will take place in Rapid City on Feb. 20 and 21.
