Ian Hessels made a 20-foot birdie putt in pouring rain on the 18th hole to win the Dakotas Tour Arrowhead Pro-Am by a shot on Saturday at Arrowhead Country Club.

Hessels finished the event at 10-under-par 203 (67-66-70), edging Ben Portie, Brian Kortan, Nathan Lashley and Ryan Conn by a single shot.

Rapid City's Jeff Salter continued his dominance in the amateur-portion of the event, shooting a third consecutive red number to win by 12 shots at 12-under 201 (62-69-70).

Hessels shook off a bogey at the par-3 17th and survived a pair of weather delays in pocketing the $21,000 first-place check. On the 550-yard, par-5 18th, Hessels found himself lying 2 in front of the green. He proceeded to hit his shot about 20 feet past the hole, before rolling in the downhill putt.

"I asked my buddy Kevin, I said 'This thing looks pretty straight, doesn't it?' He said 'Yeah,' and I played it just about right edge," Hessels said of the winning putt. "When I hit it about 6- or 7-feet away, I knew it was in."

Hessels joins Tom Kalinowski (1995) as the only players in Dakotas Tour history to win the Hillcrest Invitational Pro-Am and the Arrowhead Pro-Am in the same season.

It was not easy for Hessels, however, as he got off to a rough start Saturday. He didn't make a birdie until the ninth hole, but he managed three on the back en route to a 1-under 34.

"The wind was playing a little havoc on me," Hessels said. "I didn't have quite as good of a ball-striking round as I would have liked.

"But, you know, I've been chipping and putting so good that I gave myself a chance. I was just hanging in there and I knew where everybody else was, so I just gave myself a chance. That's really about it."

Lashley, playing alongside Hessels and Kortan in the final pairing, birdied Nos. 15 and 16 to get back in the hunt, however, he couldn't come up with a birdie over his final two holes and finished tied for second at 204 (67-68-69).

Kortan also had a chance late, but he just missed his eagle pitch on the 18th and settled for birdie. He followed up rounds of 69 and 66 with another 69.

Portie, playing in the second-to-last group, made four birdies and a bogey on the front to erase a four-shot deficit and get into contention at 8-under.

"I had a good front nine … so I knew I was right there," he said.

Following a bogey on No. 10, he birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get to 9-under.

"I looked back and I knew I was close," Portie added. "I knew I was right there, but I bogeyed 17, which wasn't good.

"But, I had a good week."

Portie and Brett Swedberg had the low round of the day - 4-under 67.

Conn, playing in the next-to-last group, joined Portie as the clubhouse leader after a clutch birdie at the 18th capped his round of 68.

"I was able to make some key putts and I struck it pretty well," said Conn. "Looking back, it was a good week. It's something I can build on for the rest of the Dakotas Tour."

Tim Ailes, the leader for most of the back nine at 10-under, bogeyed his final two holes and carded 70 to finish in a tie for sixth with Swedberg at 8-under 205.

Salter was happy to win on the course he grew up on, as it provided some redemption after last season's South Dakota Golf Association Amateur Championship.

"Yep, that was a fun tournament - the first day (62) kind of put me in cruise control for the rest of the week," Salter said. "It felt really good last year, with the state stroke play. I kind of let it slip out of my hands - I shot 75 on the last day - and I just didn't want that to happen again."

Jeff Salter and his dad, Dave Salter, are now the only father-son duo to each win the amateur event. Dave Salter took home the first-place hardware in 1990.

"Yeah, so now he doesn't have that on me," Salter joked. "I don't think he won by 12 shots though, so now we'll see what the next step is."

Tim Kalil was second at 213 (73-71-69) and six-time winner Tyler Rachetto took third at 214 (69-74-71).

Len Collins won the net title with a 202 total.
