RAPID CITY - The field for the South Dakota Golf Association Junior Invitational may not be huge, but the quality is definitely there.

Rapid City's Paige Osterloo and Pierre's Taylor Smalley - the Class AA girls' individual champion - each shot 77s to take the lead after the first day of the competition in the girls' 16-18 division and Yankton's Marc Gubbels - the Class AA boys' champion - shot a 75 to take a one-shot lead over Piedmont's Kyle Kopplin at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Friday.

The event, which has three boys' and three girls' divisions (12-13, 14-15 and 16-18), moves to the Golf Club at Red Rock for the final round today beginning at 8 a.m.

Both Smalley and Osterloo are looking for slightly better days at Red Rock today as neither felt their games were terribly sharp on a hot day on the par-72 layout.

"I just didn't play very well early," Smalley said of her 5-over 41 on the front nine. "I played even on the back which was good, but I'm just going to have to play better to start with tomorrow. Maybe I don't like these morning tournaments too much."

Osterloo felt that her putter let her down at times and hopes that getting out on her home course will straighten it out.

"It's my home course so maybe that will help. I had, I think, 13 putts for birdie out there and didn't make one of them," Osterloo, who finished tied for second behind Smalley at the Class AA championship this spring in Mitchell, said. "My chipping was good but I need to work on my putting a little bit."

Smalley is excited about getting out to Red Rock as well, where her former club professional - Jason Young - is the current head pro.

"I'm really looking forward to playing Red Rock tomorrow," Smalley said. "That's one of my favorite courses so it should be pretty fun."

Osterloo expects an exciting day as well.

"Taylor's a really good player and she plays good at Red Rock, also, so it should be a pretty fun day," Osterloo said. "It could be back and forth."

The boys' 16-18 group could be a tight race with Sioux Falls' Austin Erikson (78), Aberdeen's Austin Hieb (78), Yankton's Dillon May (79), Rapid City's Brogan Pappel (79), Aberdeen's Levi Drube (79), Rapid City's Mac Young and Batesland's Montana Sierra (81) all within six shots of the lead.

Hot Springs' Cassidy Vollmer (104) leads the 12-13 girls' division by one shot over Rapid City's Sydney James; Hot Springs' P.J. Wetzel and Rapid City's Sam Musch lead the 12-13 boys' division at 80; Rapid City's Erin Cheever leads the 14-15 girls' with an 82 and Belle Fourche's Joseph Courtney is out in front of the boys' 14-15 field after firing a 75 to tie Gubbels with the best round of the day.
