VERMILLION -The University of South Dakota football team will host the first of four team camps that they will be conducting this summer, beginning Sunday.
The Coyote football camp, which is the largest NCAA Division I team camp in the Midwest, gives high school athletes an opportunity to develop their football skills under the guidance of USD head coach Ed Meierkort and his coaching staff.
The camps begin with an 11-man camp that goes from Sunday through Tuesday and then will be immediately followed by another 11-man camp running Wednesday through July 11. USD will then hold an 8- and 9-man camp July 13 through July 15 before concluding with one more 11-man camp July 16-18.
"This year we have a great number of teams coming in to participate at our camp, we expect over 90 teams to be on the USD campus in the upcoming weeks," said Meierkort. "These programs get the chance to go up against other programs from around the region that they normally wouldn't face during the regular season. Teams like Harlan High School in Iowa and Sioux Falls O'Gorman, who haven't lost often the last three years, will have the chance to compete against each other. We run a highly competitive, but safe camp. We blow a quick whistle but the contact is high spirted."
