HILL CITY - The Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers jumped to a 20-0 first quarter lead on the Hill City Rangers on their way to a 66-20 non-conference high school football win at Ranger Field on Friday night.
The Golddiggers scored on their first possession on a Shane Dubray 33-yard run, before Leif Atkinson picked up a fumble and scored for a 12-0 lead before five minutes had even run off the clock.
"It was a good win," Lead-Deadwood head coach Tony Biesiot said. "We came out and forced a couple of turnovers early that we were able to capitalize on and we got out to a nice little lead there."
The Golddiggers scored on a 26-yard touchdown run by Jared Mack to take a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and while the game wasn't technically over at that point, it didn't feel like the Golddiggers had much to worry about.
"We did a good job of getting them into some third-and-long situations, and we capitalized on them," Biesiot said.
The Rangers came back after a Jared Mack touchdown run made it 26-0 at the beginning of the second quarter and scored their first touchdown of the game on a Chance Clason 9-yard run around the left end to make it 26-6.
Lead-Deadwood scored on another turnover on the Rangers' next possession when safety Tanner Adler picked off a Hill City pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown to make it a 32-6 game heading into the half.
The Rangers came out after the intermission and put together an 84-yard scoring drive that culminated in another scoring run by Clason, this time from 2 yards out, as Hill City closed the gap to 32-14 with 7:47 to play in the third. That was as close as the game would get, as Lead-Deadwood would outscore the Rangers 34-6 over the last 19:47.
Hill City (0-2) will travel to Martin to take on Bennett County next Friday. Lead-Deadwood (1-2) will play Hot Springs next Saturday in the second game of the Prospector Bowl in Deadwood at 4 p.m.
