Area Scene: Spearfish Canyon run-walk to benefit children

SPEARFISH - The 23rd Annual Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon and 5K Walk is July 25.

The event features a combined 13.1 mile run and a 5K run/walk in Spearfish Canyon.

All proceeds support the Northern Hills Area CASA Program, a local nonprofit organization advocating for safe permanent homes for abused and neglected children who are in the court system through no fault of their own.

Registration is from 6 a.m. until 6:45 a.m. in Spearfish City Park on Canyon Street. The 5K race begins at 7:15 a.m. and the half marathon will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Buses will leave from the registration site in the park and transport half marathon participants to the start line at the top of the canyon. The last bus will leave at 6:55 a.m. Five water stops are provided along the paved marathon route.

Awards are presented to the first three runners in each category for the half marathon and the first two runners in each category for the 5K. Medals will be given to all runners who finish the half marathon.

The entry fee includes a T-shirt for each participant, as available. Early registration guarantees a T-shirt. Registration forms can be downloaded from www.nhcasa.com. Trapshooting league begins soon: The summer trap league will begin next week at the Rapid City Trap and Skeet Club.

The 10-week league will begin June 30. Shooters may either shoot on Tuesday or Thursday nights, beginning at 4 p.m. each night.

Sign up will begin on the first Tuesday and Thursday night of league shooting. No pre-registration is required. The practice trap will be open and available to public shooting on league nights as well.

Trap club hosts championships: The Rapid City Trap Club hosted the 2009 South Dakota Western Zone Trapshooting Championships on June 13 and 14.

Matt Bartholow, of Rapid City, was declared the zone champion after posting a total score of 293-of-300 targets. He shot all 100 targets in the 16-yards singles event, Shot 95-of-100 is the handicap event and 98-of-100 in the doubles.

Bartholow also won the 16-yard zone champion and doubles zone champion titles.

Judy Bonefield, of Camp Crook, was named the lady zone champion with a score of 233-of-300. Jim Anderson, of Custer, earned the veteran champion title with 275-of-300, and Bill Powers, of Rapid City, shot 287-of-300 to win the senior vet title.

The junior and sub junior champions were determined by the combined totals of their 16-yard singles and handicap scores. Kylie Kintigh, of Rapid City, won the junior title with 194-of-200 and Jordan Hart, of Rapid City, won the sub junior award with 179-of-200.

Foster Bartholow, of Rapid City, was the handicap zone champion for his posting of 98-of-100 in the competition.
