RAPID CITY - The Night and Day disc golf tournament will present two different challenges to local disc golfers on July 12.

Disc golfers will play a round in the daylight and a round at night. During the daylight round, golfers will be allowed to play according to the normal rules. The night portion of the tournament makes it unique, said Teresa O'Connell, who is organizing the event with the help of John Anderson, Brenda Bure and the Black Hills Disc Golf Confederacy.

Golfers will only be provided with three discs with glow sticks attached to them. The players and baskets will also be illuminated with glow sticks.

O'Connell said that playing at night will be a challenge because the players cannot use their own discs and they will lose depth perception in the dark. Both factors will contribute to higher scores.

"If you are used to playing with different discs, you will be pretty limited," O'Connell said.

O'Connell said that players in the tournament are getting a deal when considering the economy and gas prices. For $20, players can get eight hours of fun and a meal.

"It's just a good value," she said.

She also expects about 55 players this year for the night round, and she has equipment ready for 60 players. Players can pregister at www.blackhillsdiscgolf.com or at the event. The day round begins at 4:30 p.m. and after a meal served onsite, the night round will begin at 9 p.m. Players can register for day and night rounds, or just one round. The night-round registration is at 8:30 p.m.

Prizes for the winners include discs, gift cards and T-shirts.

O'Connell, who is organizing her first tournament, hopes to get a chance to play herself. She enjoys disc golf because it is a challenge to better herself. This week in league play, she met her goal of reaching par on a course.

The next disc golf tournament is slated for October near the old mining camp of Placerville in the Black Hills. O'Connell said an August tournament is still a possibility.
